Airag is horse milk. It is fermented and normally stored and served at room temperature. The taste is sour compared to the “normal” cow milk Americans use with their Cheerios.

Mongolians drink this stuff like it’s the greatest thing on Earth.

  5. I didn’t like it and was trying to keep a polite smile. That said, it wasn’t that bad and I would try it again. For lactose intolerant people, this milk is perfectly safe to drink because the lactose gets broken down during the fermentation. Close to 90% of Mongolians are lactose intolerant, so it makes sense that airag would have such a following.
